A l’origine ce groupe accompagnait Grant Tracy, un chanteur de l’est de Londres. The Sunsets étaient: Pete Dello, soliste, Ray Cane, rythmique, Norman Smith, basse et James Hurley, batterie. Ils ont été repérés par un directeur artistique d’EMBER records, lors d’un concours à Bognor Régis. Début 1961 ils ont enregistré quelques morceaux de Pomus et Mort Shuman, en accompagnant Grant Tracy. Puis ils ont fait un disque instrumental en interprétant «The cry of the wild goose» de Terry Gilykson, la face B était une de leur composition, le fameux «Manhunt» qui sera repris chez nous par Les Players. Néanmoins ils enregistrent quelques autres morceaux dont un morceau de Carl Mann, qui retint l’attention de Saturday club, l’émission de la BBC. Ils composèrent même un morceau pour ce programme, qui n’a malheureusement jamais été publié.
Puis le temps passa avant qu’en 1963 ils n’enregistrent 4 autres instrumentaux pour un album avec Grant Tracy, qui sortit peu après. Ce LP publié dans une collection bon marché comprend outre les 2 premiers instrus «One mint julep», «In the hall of the mountain king», «Little Kelly», autre composition de Pete Dello, «Savoy Club stomp» . Ce dernier titre aurait été enregistré à Hambourg en 1962, lorsqu’ils jouèrent là ainsi qu’à Hanovre.
En Angleterre ils ont joué beaucoup au sud de Londres, passant à la télévision régionale ainsi qu’à de nombreuses émissions de radio. Ils firent aussi une tournée avec the Outlaws, et Neil Christian & the Crusaders.
