Silvano has just cut in London the French cover of Five hundred miles with Richard Anthony, which would make a huge hit in the summer 1962. Ducretet Thomson , a subsidiary of Pathé Marconi, signed the guys and let them record a full LP. They cut 12 tracks the album was sponsored by the actress Claudia Cardinale, who was very popular. Leo made the arrangements, three tracks have just been penned by French composers: the smile of Paris by A.Canfora, (also an established conductor), with J.Baselli, Oh Lady , a vocal hit by Dick Rivers, composed by J.P. Bourtayre and a twist by A. Gaso, je ne veux pas t’aimer. All the other tracks were good covers like Chariot, Percolator, twist a Napoli, Darling, toy of love, le voyageur de la nuit, which was the movie theme of “l’homme à la valise” featuring as top actress Claudia Cardinale, stranger on the shore, Quien sabe and ne t’en fais pas mon vieux a small hit by Richard Anthony. The album will be a good seller with some 100 000 copies.
In September the record company released the usual EP with four tracks from the LP (Percolator, Le voyageur de la nuit, darling and Quien sabe). The teenager radio shows played often those tracks and The Four dreamers were requested to play in some big shows. At the end of October 1962 they were put on the bill of the Gene Vincent show at theatre de l’etoile for a week.
This raised some problems since Silvano Santorio, Georges Lucas and Carlo Bencini were under contract with Richard Anthony and other top acts. Leo Berdugo, lead guitar and manager of the band, contacted one of his colleague, a well-known session man Marc Benoît, 27 years, and a bass player. Marc introduced his fellow, a Toulon (south of France) born guy, 25 years, Jean Garon, who has just finished his musical (percussion) studies. Leo completed the band with another session guy André Bénichou. The band was ready for the Gene Vincent show, where they ended the first part.
Then back to the studio, where they recorded le Grand M and en twistant le madison penned by the famous Mickey Baker, with voici venir and danse plus pres de moi. Then came 1963 with another record with POW wow, Nautilus, Arizona. By mid 1963 it was the time of the fourth EP with the cover of hotel happiness, a self penned Attila (L.Berdugo), and two other tracks to Venus and scramble. The sales are still good enough so that they made a fifth EP by end of the year with covers of Ginchy and Bleak house, Tovaritch and still water runs deep.
The year 1963 was a very active year they appeared on the famous TV show Age tendre et tête de bois, they made some clips, called at that time “scopitone”, which were played in the French Riviera by Madame Davis Boyer. Her husband was a famous conductor and sax player. They toured in France, Belgium and Italy with Dalida, the top singer.
In 1964 they cut another EP with good covers of Bombora (the Atlantics) la mamma (Charles Aznavour vocal hit). During the same session they also recorded what was going to be their last record: Jet melody, a cover of Dragon Fly ( Tornados’ cover),amour & poker, and blue guitar. Then they toured again with Dalida, as backing band and instrumental act in Brazil.
1964 was a hard time for instrumental bands and the Four dreamer’s fate was the same as for their fellow competitors, the Merseybeat had taken over the musical scene.
In 1968 André Bénichou had the idea to play Bach with a guitar band in Jazz style, he hired the former Fingers: Jean Claude Olivier, guitar, Yvon Rioland, bass and Jean Marie Hausser, drums. They cut two LPs who made huge hits in America, Canada and Japan. They toured from 1968 all over the world till 1975. Those albums have just been reissued on CD with two unreleased tracks.
Today Marc Benoît is still on the road as a jazz musician, Silvano Santorio is producing , arranging and recording albums with singer like Isabelle Aubret. Leo Berdugo was during a long period a session guy and then became a guitar teacher. Jean Garon made the first prize at Conservatoire de Paris, Musical high school, and then joined la Garde republicaine, with whom he plays in the big occasions for the France ‘s President de la Republique or his guests.

Quand avez vous enregistré votre premier disque de guitariste réputé ?
Mon premier succès a été un Album de Jazz paru chez VOGUE au début des années 60 : JAZZ GUITAR BACH, du classique arrangé en Jazz. Cet album a eu beaucoup de succès en France, mais aussi et surtout aux ETATS UNIS et au JAPON. Il m’a fait connaître.
Quelle était votre formation musicale ?
J’ai étudié le solfège et fait des études de guitare classique, j’ai commencé très jeune avant 10 ans.
Quels étaient vos musiciens préférés ?
LES SHADOWS bien sûr et après LES BEATLES.
Qui a trouvé le nom des FOUR DREAMERS?
Tous ensemble avec notre directeur artistique et notre maison de disques.
Après le spectacle de GENE VINCENT à L’ETOILE , le groupe était lancé, les disques se vendaient bien.
Vous rappelez vous des disques que vous avez enregistré alors ?
Oui, on a enregistré un nouveau 45t avec en titre phare: LE GRAND M de MICKEY BAKER, un grand musicien de Jazz qui a composé beaucoup d’excellents titres, il a enregistré de nombreux disques dont beaucoup de disques de guitare. Ce titre a été un succès pour BILLY BRIDGE, de même que l’autre morceau de MICKEY BAKER que nous avons repris en TWISTANT LE MADISON. Les deux autres titres sont VOICI VENIR et DANSE PLUS PRES DE MOI. Ce disque fera de bonnes ventes.
En 63, nous sommes rentrés en studio pour mettre en boite nos trois derniers 45EP.
DUCRETET THOMSON sortira d’abord NAUTILUS avec POW WOW, en titre vedette et ARIZONA et EVERYBODY LOVES ME BUT YOU. NAUTILUS est un bon morceau composé par R.DAVIES, POW WOW a été repris par LES CHAUSSETTES NOIRES, c’est une composition de DE FELICE / BUZZEO. ARIZONA est de notre compositeur préféré R. BROWN et EVERYBODY LOVES de R. SELF. C’est un bon disque avec l’intéressant ARIZONA, le très bon POW WOW et avec l’excellent NAUTILUS.
Mi 63, sort le quatrième 45t EP avec une excellente version instrumentale d’HOTEL HAPPINESS du fameux L. CARR, popularisé en France par SHEILA sous le titre LE RANCH DE MES REVES, l’autre titre vedette était ATTILA une composition de LEO BERDUGO et moi même. Ce morceau est sans doute un de nos meilleurs enregistrements. Les deux autres titres sont TO VENUS de P.CLIP et le classique SCRAMBLE de BOB SUMMERS.
Ce disque se vendra bien et fin 63 DUCRETET sort le 4ème 45t EP GINCHY le tube de BERT WEEDON, et BLEAK HOUSE de John MISTLETOE, qui fut un tube des GLADIATORS en Angleterre. Groupe formé à l’origine par MIKE “NERO” O’NEAL et TONY HARVEY et BOOTS SLADE. Ces deux bons morceaux étaient complétés par TOVARITCH de L. CARR, classique de l’instrumental repris récemment par THE QUIETS et STILL WATER RUNS DEEP.
Etes-vous passé au GOLF DROUT ?
Oui, en 63 je crois, j’avais chanté MACK THE KNIFE, nous avions fait un tabac. 63-64 a été une très bonne période pour le groupe, nous avons fait de nombreux galas en province, mais aussi en Belgique et en Italie.
Nous sommes aussi passés à la télé, à AGE TENDRE ET TETE DE BOIS.
64 arrive et vous enregistrez encore deux nouveaux 45t ?
Au cours de cette séance, nous enregistrons LA MAMMA de Charles AZNAVOUR dans une version très personnalisée, BOMBORA de P.HOOD, batteur des ATLANTICS qui ont eu un gros HIT en Australie en 63. Les deux autres titres sont JAMAIS TOUT SEUL et LA VIE CONTINUE. Dans la même séance, nous avons enregistré ce qui sera notre dernier 45t EP avec JET MELODIE et avec DRAGONFLY de Wain/Gray/Asquith qui fut un tube des TORNADOS en 63 classé 36ème au HIT PARADE Britannique. Les deux autres titres AMOUR, POKER et BLUE GUITAR sont très bons et nous font regretter que cette aventure se soit arrêté là.
Comment était choisi votre répertoire ?
D’un commun accord entre nous et notre directeur artistique.
Pourquoi la carrière DES FOUR DREAMERS s’est elle interrompue ?
En 64, l’arrivée du MERSEYBEAT et des BEATLES ont bouleversé le monde musical et le public a aimé ce style. Le temps de l’instrumental était fini.
Pourtant il paraît que MARC et vous même chantiez bien ?
Oui, dans les galas on chantait, mais notre goût pur la musique et nos qualités musicales s’exprimaient mieux avec nos guitares et la batterie qu’avec nos voix.
Que s’est il passé alors ?
Nous avons tous poursuivi notre carrière de musiciens de studios, chacun de notre côté. Personnellement, j’ai enregistré avec AZNAVOUR, BECAUD, BREL et MICHEL LEGRAND avec lequel je suis revenu à mes premières amours, le JAZZ.
J’ai également fait de la scène avec DALIDA, DANIEL GUICHARD, MACIAS etc…
Que sont devenus maintenant LES FOUR DREAMERS ?
Marc BENOIT est un musicien de Jazz que je revois souvent et avec plaisir. SILVANO SANTORIO est un musicien reconnu et aussi très actif dans le domaine de la production.
LEO BERDUGO a longtemps joué en studio et beaucoup composé, il a récemment ouvert un école de guitare à Nice où il vit très heureux.
JEAN GARON qui fut grand prix du conservatoire de Paris aux percussions, a rejoint la Garde Républicaine où il continue à exercer ses talents de musicien.
Vous même, vous êtes aussi un compositeur?
Oui, j’ai composé des musiques de films et aussi des Jingles pour la Pub.
Quel regard posez vous-sur ces années 60 ?
Ce fut une très belle période de notre vie, avec ce fourmillement de nouveaux groupes, la popularisation de la musique auprès d’un nouveau public, les jeunes de moins de 20 ans.
Votre meilleur souvenir ?
Le meilleur souvenir, c’est l’Album JAZZ GUITAR BACH, et les FOUR DREAMERS ATTILA composé avec LEO.
